Gold purity, hallmarking and HUID

Read purity declarations and use official verification resources before buying.

Karat is a proportion, not a price

The theoretical gold fraction is karat divided by 24: 22K is about 91.67% and 18K is 75%. A purity label does not tell you the making charge, stone value or achievable resale price. Calculators estimate declared fine-metal content; they do not assay an item.

Use official verification

Use BIS consumer guidance and the official BIS Care resources linked by BIS to check hallmarking information and HUID details. Match the physical item, seller and invoice information; a screenshot supplied by a seller is not independent verification. Requirements and exemptions can change, so consult the current official guidance for the product you are buying.

Keep a purchase record

Ask for itemised weight, declared purity and charges. Retain the invoice and seller contact information. If information conflicts, resolve it with the seller or the appropriate official grievance channel before relying on the quotation.
